Description:
  • Annual
  • Painted Mountain, also named Indian Corn is a miniature type of flour corn that has traditionally been grown by the Native Americans.
  • It is an upright annual bearing 1-1.2m stalks with arching, pointed lanceolate leaves and male and female flowers that are borne separately on the same plant.
  • It bears up to two narrow, bright, multi-colored ears of about 15-20cm in length.
  • Painted Mountain contains every shade of color - vivid oranges, golds, reds, browns, etc. and takes 70 – 90 days to mature.
  • This is a very hardy variety that is suitable for cold areas.
  • Will grow food where many other varieties will fail.
  • Soil pH requirements: 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral).
  • Needs full sun.
Culinary Uses:
  • Can be eaten fresh.
  • If dried, the grain can be ground into flour, boiled into hominy, or parched.
  • Fresh leaves and husks are used for wrapping foods.
Parts Used:
  • Stigmas and styles of female flowers (cornsilk) and fruits (ears).
Medicinal Uses. It is said that:
  • Corn silk is a sweet and cooling herb that is diuretic, lowers blood sugar levels, stimulates bile flow, and prevents formation of urinary stones.
Other Uses:
  • The ears are often used as decoration and the colored leaves can be used in paper-making.
  • Food source for livestock – can be grazed off the field.
  • The lack of woodiness in the stalks and soft starch of the grain give it a higher digestibility to animals than other corns.
